My musical week
Last Sunday was the Gloriana concert and it went off really well. The Britten A Boy was Born was exhilarating and despite a couple of minor glitches went off very well. The audience, bigger than I expected for such a hot day, was very appreciative.
Then on Wednesday we had a rehearsal for Handel's Messiah, which we performed at St Peter's Eastern Hill last night and tonight. It was a joint St Peter's/Gloriana concert, conducted by Andrew Raiskums with a small orchestra of local early music players.
There was a wonderful quartet of soloists: Wendy Jore (soprano) and Alison Lemoh (alto) have both sung at St John's and were a nicely contrasted pair, Alison's husky alto and Wendy's rich and large soprano. The tenor, Christopher Busietta is a great find and I'll be following his career. And as for Grantley's singing of the bass arias - well, it's always a treat to hear him sing: his beautiful tone, vocal agility and intelligent use of the text are exemplary.
The choir was a mix of Gloriana and St Peter's and was a good little group and performed very well (even if I do say so myself). The ever-delightful Linda Kent played continuo, complete with sheep.
One other highlight of this week has been seeing BA, who is back in Melbourne briefly and also sang in Messiah. We had a quick catch-up at Wednesday's rehearsal and then a quick meal tonight before the performance (he didn't sing last night). He's just as funny and entertaining as ever and we had a lovely time.
Now I have no more concerts until next year, but do have one final rehearsal on Monday night for January's concert in Ballarat.
